It took us a few weeks to feel well enough to make an out of town visit to our school teacher daughter in Corpus.
We made the drive at the beginning of the month in our brand new car, Rosabella, a red PT Cruiser in pristine condition.
Our daughter was outside waiting for us having monitored our journey like a fussy mother hen since leaving Dallas. We had brand new, hand me down, matching phones and had learned how to text and pick up phone calls during the seven hour trip.
Her Efficiency was sparkling clean and delightful, we unloaded the car, caught our breath for a moment and took her out for dinner
On the way back to her flat Rosabella’s engine cut out on the motorway and we coasted off into a Burger King car park. Her friends came to give us a lift home and hubs waited for AAA to arrive.
The following morning, after having it towed to a garage, we found out it had thrown its timing belt. Our car was out of commission for the weekend but we were able to pamper the volvo and give it a good polish and fluid overhaul as well as re-attach the bumper and repair her sunroof. Bits and pieces that a busy teacher and student overlooks from time to time.
We did a lot in the small city of Corpus whose population is a scant 308,000. We walked on the front passed the marina,
we toured the USS Lexington moored in the harbour,
Posed in front of the planes on the flight deck,
and had fun in the wheel house.
noted an interesting take on a cross wall made of knots, and snapped this pic from the escalator on board!
Look at the narrow corridors,
USS Lexington is some ship!
We picnicked at the water park and gazed artistically off to the West!
Did you know that Corpus is the home to Whataburger? There are parks, streets and overpasses named for the burger joint.
Father and daughter went to see Batman, we shopped and found a desk for her computer where she can do schoolwork, we hooked her up to the internet and installed her Apple TV, hubs soldered her birthday gift charms to her bracelet and we shopped for a kettle and computer power cords online.
We tried a family owned muffin shop, crossed the new bridge with its colourful light display to eat at a restaurant on the beach, Fajitaville, where we could watch the city light up and children run in the waves while their parents drank giant margaritas!
We made my famous trifle for her work colleagues despite the frozen eggs from her freezer/fridge!
And baked and enjoyed a belated birthday cake for hubs using the measuring cups we’d bought still attached with the plastic tie. “So I don’t lose any!” she explained.
is this like wearing shoes with the string still attached?
We toured her campus and caught this tree taking a nap!
HEB did well by us as we filled her pantry, cupboards, fridge and freezer.
We did laundry across the parking lot a couple of times and I cleaned Thumper’s cage while letting her out to stretch her legs and cavort.
We went to mass at the wealthiest Catholic church I have ever been in,
we were shown around her work place. All her babies clamoured for attention and lots of hugging and kissing went on!
And of course we talked and talked and talked…we forgot our cards!
After four days we left with a repaired RosaBella, several hundred dollars lighter and tears in our eyes.
My daughter said,
“This is what we talked about as children, living in our own place and having you come and stay.” She was the first child to fulfill the dream and we all had a thoroughly good time together.
We wore her out!
Miss you Parsis, thank you so much for putting us up!
