As you know, or maybe not, Hubs and I joined two Housesitting Sites where we strutted our stuff, asked our freinds for references and applied for jobs all over the world Minding other people’s houses and their pets!
Really, the ultimate in Green Living: we forego buying our own house to watch over other people’s properties and beloved, non-human, family members, anywhere in the world, while they are away!
It is a little bit of a catch 22 situation because until we have landed a job the only references we can elicit are personal which say nothing of our ability to look after a house, our aptitude to care for pets or our trustworthiness.
We applied for several positions, twiddled our thumbs, applied again to many more and bided our time, and wondered if we’d wasted our money?
A month ago we got a bite! A couple in Florida loved our profile and short listed us for their house on stilts in Central Florida.
We hit it off over Skype and accepted the position for three months.
Our duties?
Walkies….with two couch surfing dogs…
Looking after their pretty home…fully equipped with English gadgets like an electric kettle, Keurig, marmite and a six foot bath…as if it were our own.
Watching the world go by on the canal…
Fishing and generally messing about on the water.
Swinging under the deck overlooking an 87 year old beaut!
A 47 foot cruiser used as guest quarters!
Writing, relaxing, cooking, dreaming!
Yawning!
Alligators were mentioned in passing… we’ll keep the dogs leashed and darn…
No kayaking for me!
We are heading out on 1st May and will meander slowly, in our Lexus, across country enjoying pasturelands
for 1000 miles.
Will I be allowed behind the wheel again?
A dinner party of roast beef & Yorkshire pudding is promised at the other end to welcome and introduce us to the neighbors…
And after three months?
We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it…
The world’s our oyster as long as we get a glowing report from Blake & Skye…
