Hard Drive Problems…

Last year my external hard-drive, H.G.Wells, crashed and with it went all my past documents, photos and tunes.

I found a genius of a lad from church who managed to salvage everything.

Thank you God for technically minded individuals.

I bought a new external drive and went back to business as usual.

Business as usual means that I route my iTunes and iPhoto programmes through the external gadget because my old mac just didn’t have the memory to sustain everything on its internal hard drive.

I bought a new computer this year, with vast amounts of memory, probably more than I’ll need in its lifetime.

Old habits die hard, I routed everything through my external again and all was well…until last night when all of a sudden HG Wells upped and quit.

Luckily I had a brand new drive so was able to backup all my files and my computer…alas and alack, all but my tunes and  photos because they were safely stored on trusty H.G.Wells that was no more!

There is one redeeming factor to this story, Photo Stream, that nifty little feature that uploads photos I’ve taken, as I take them, without me having to plug anything in!   I don’t understand how it works, something to do with a cloud, but it brought back pictures I’d taken since April, much to my relief!

Thank you God for all this advanced technology that works even when I don’t understand it!

I will, of course, call my genius from church and hope he can perform the same miracle, my real worry is…what is going on?

Is it because I am using it as an extension of my computer that it gets tired after a year and gasps its last?  Or have I just had two naff hard drives?

Is it because I carry it around with me when I go from room to room because wthout it I don’t have access to my iTunes or iPhotos, and the motion upsets its equilibrium?  Or have I just been unlucky?

I need to know because I can’t risk my backup crashing every year otherwise what’s the point of a backup?

This stress inducing event had me tossing and turning all night, I awoke with my stomach in knots and wanted to try the crashed drive again and again in the hopes it may rally for long enough for me to retrieve my pictures and music.

I stayed my troubled mind and decided on a plan of action.

I had to calm down in order to be able to carry on so  decided I wouldn’t do anything about trying my hard drive again after giving it a 14 hour break or seeking retrieval help until I’d slowed my heart rate and eased my churning stomach; not even a peek!

I journalled and read the bible with hubs as usual.  We took in a chapter of a book about church and state here in England, heavy stuff!  I did an hour of yoga and stayed in Shavasana for a few extra minutes in the warm sunshine  streaming onto my mat.

I showered without a glance at dead H.G.Wells and set myself the task of writing two blogs using the newly streamed photos I’d taken yesterday.

Now, 4 hours of tender loving care later, I am ready to take an hour before lunch to recover myself and decide how I am going to deal with the business of retrieval and what to do going forward.

Thank you God for your strength beside me this morning, I can now breathe.

Om!  Amen!
