Mamma Mia…

We decided to go and see our final musical in the West End of London.

Travelling with my youngest is an experience, she always has a malady that slows her down.

On Saturday it was a sore hip and bruised tail bone.  These dancers!

We began our trip to London with a quick spin around St. Paul’s, I wanted a photo of Samuel Johnson’s plinth with his Latin inscription which Ian and I had translated and loved.

A wedding was scheduled in the crypt chapel so we could only see Lord Nelson’s sarcophagus, we weren’t allowed to walk passed Wellington’s.

However we did manage to people watch as the guests made their way through the refectory into the chapel wearing cheeky fascinators, high heeled shoes, stunning garden party dresses, morning tails and top hats.  Unfortunately it was pouring with rain and as Malia so astutely observed,

“No outdoor photos for them this afternoon!”  What a pity.

We saw another wedding in progress inside Notre Dame de France over by Leicester Square.  The bride and groom were at the altar exchanging their vows, the wedding party had been told to wear hot pink!  It was delightfully colourful.

July 14th was a popular day for weddings and birthdays (Happy 23rd Paris), you would think the sun could have been counted on to shine this far into summer.

We found our way to Piccadilly Circus despite the complete closure of a couple of the main tube lines and walked to the Prince of Wales theatre to stand in line for matinee tickets.

We were lucky.  We were very lucky indeed.  Our seats were front row centre!

I was a little bit worried about being so close but by the time we were seated we realised it was perfect.

The theatre was tiny and not raked on the floor so we could have been stuck behind a large fellow, as it was, our view was unobstructed and we could see and interact with the orchestra, who were underneath the stage, and watch the conductor sitting in his booth two seats from us.

Of course we were totally enthralled by the action playing out right in front of us to bother with anyone else…not!!

Malia was hoping the show was going to be as good as the film and she wasn’t disappointed!

It was such a treat, we were privvy to all the facial expressions and even saw the loogie that was hocked on the male lead moments into the number where all the men were preparing for the bachelor party. We laughed, they laughed and we didn’t think they were going to get through the song.  Finally, when the hocking dancer picked up the shirt he’d ripped off Sky he  wiped his neck where the loogie had landed and we all howled!  It was so funny!

On the way home I snapped Malia turning the key in this flower decorated phone box,

she was all hyped up from the effects of the musical and I had goose bumps just thinking about her potential.
