Obedience is Not a Choice…

Someone posed a question this week the answer to which I am addressing on my radio show this afternoon.  Live on Toginet Radio at 4-5pm CT.

The question is:

“What do you do while you are teaching your other children and your youngest is swinging from the chandelier?”

Sounds all too familiar doesn’t it?  Today I will give the simple answer,

“Dimetapp!”

But of course the real answer lies in scripture.  The foundation for a sucessful homeschool is obedience.  Obedience is not a choice.  When God says jump we jump!  He has it all worked out for our own good, not to make our lives miserable, so that we can avoid the consequences.  This is what we say to our children:

“Hey Kid, listen up, this is for your own good!”

I know my children think we’re stifling them, we’re intruding in their lives, we’re wrecking their image.  We’re really not.  We love them; we want the best for them.  We are God on earth for them!  I tell them:

“Hey Kid, listen up, I’m God to you!”

Of course what I mean is, I am taking my job of stewardship, seriously.  I am being God’s ears, eyes, voice and hands on earth, I am taking care of his gifts (our children) until they are ready to take care of themselves.  Which won’t come soon enough for me!

If we are planning on educating our children successfully, then obedience is a critical ingredient in the home schooling arena.  Before we can expect our children to obey us we have to have a healthy understanding of obedience and be willing to submit ourselves.

“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.  Wives submit to your husbands as to the Lord.”  (Ephesians 5: 21-22)

Do we know what it means to obey?  What about the obedience called for when we took our marriage vows?  The promises we make to keep in touch with friends or to care for the sick or lonely around us?  Obedience to support our widows and orphans?  Do we have obedient hearts?  Do we think we can choose what to obey and what to ignore because it doesn’t suit our lifestyle?

Now, when you have answered these questions, lets instill the idea into our children’s hearts,

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”  (Ephesians 6:1)

And bring that child down from the chandelier!
