Parents teach their children elaborate passwords to keep them safe. I found they made me feel safe for they empowered me to send strangers to pick up my children when I was caught late at the office. Ah, what a terrible parent you may think! It wasn’t as bad as it sounds but it was pretty edgy. I managed a large pool of people who made it possible for me to stretch my security code to meet my needs. And stretch it I did.
As my family expanded and I grew wiser I decided I did not really know these people I was entrusting my children with, and I developed paranoia. By the time my oldest was eight, my paranoia finally manifested itself as homeschooling and I would not even allow my priest friends to take my son home from an acolyte training session because… one never knew….did one?
