Remembrance Day…

Today I give thanks for all those who have risked or lost their lives in what they perceived as the pursuit of justice and peace.

I give thanks that I am able to enjoy the freedoms I have in the countries where I am privileged to be a citizen.

I give thanks that I am able to express myself without censorship and have been able to raise my children to do the same.

I give thanks that I can worship as I wish.

I give thanks that snipers don’t take cover on my land.

In England this day I would be wearing a poppy to remind me of the bloodshed in Flanders during World War I and the signing of the armistice that brought it to an end at 11am on November 11th, 1918.

Veterans of all wars are honored this day and silence is kept for two minutes at 11am for quiet reflection.

Close on the heels of election day on Tuesday I am amazed by the numbers who have publicly voiced their contempt of the new administration.

America is a democracy, find a way to live with your elected government.

At mass on Wednesday our priest told us that he wasn’t going to tell us how he voted,

“It’s none of your business,” he said.

He didn’t want to know which way we had cast our lots,

“It is none of my business,” he said.

What he was most concerned about was the hatred Christians were feeling towards one another,

“I came here today and found two parishioners bashing each other over their party affiliation,” he told us.

In Luke 15:3-8 he read the parable of the shepherd who left his flock of 99 sheep to go and find the one who had wandered off.

Followed by the one about the woman who lost one of her ten silver coins and swept her house until she had found the missing piece.

We are the wandering sheep, the lost coin.

God is the seeking shepherd, the desperate woman.

He loves us so passionately and extravagantly that He wants us to follow Him, trust Him, find peace in Him.

What right to hatred do we have as Christians?

Divisive talk, judgement and disrespect does not spell love.

Find a way to live in this sinful world as it is, not as you would have it. (The Serenity Prayer)

Our nation is a great one because of her people.

Count the ways you’re proud to be American.

Keep silence for two minutes today,

Remember,
