Tapping Out a Code…

YellowC's

On the tube a long time ago last year I was on my way back from taking one of my children to Heathrow, after a trip that was way too short.

Sitting opposite me were a well dressed elderly couple with two large bags.  They were on their way home after travelling, I had heard them draw a deep breath as they boarded the train and say, “home!”

He had his hat in his lap, she had her gloves in hers.

Her hands were slender.  Her right one was busy tapping out a message on her suitcase.

She was gazing ahead concentrating on something she could hear in her head and her fingers tapped out the message.

I watched her, wondering, imagining, she had been in the WAF during the war and tapped out morse code in response to incoming messages.

After a few moments her husband gently laid his hand over hers to silence the imaginery communication.

It was a touching moment when she looked up at him and smiled and then returned to her work.
