The Icing on My Cupcake…

A friend of mine struggled with a project her husband had always wanted to do… after years of gentle coaxing she thought she was finally won over and made the decision to fully support him in his dream by joining him on his, now their,

Joint Venture.

Doing the right thing for the wrong reason can hurt your soul;

Loving, honoring, obeying is all well and good but unless it makes you supremely happy it will break you…eventually.

Together my friend and he walked from Lands End to John O’Groats with their 3 children.

She had a physical breakdown nearing the end of the hike, her body let her down.

She had a mental breakdown on trying to pick up the threads of her life (which she had completely forsaken) when she arrived home, her spirit let her down.

And she was ashamed, angry and depressed.

She couldn’t face herself anymore let alone her husband or her children because she had let them down…

Or so she thought.

She grew to understand, through deep and tearful soul searching, that She was She and He was He and together they could be We, differently.

She is unique bringing gifts to her marriage, her friendships, her children, her colleagues.

Together as a heterogeneous mix, united yet separate.

Finding the essence of who I am through prayer and meditation has been the singular, most precious gift I’ve given myself.

Respecting the essence of who I am is grace itself.

When I am fulfilled my husband, partner, friends and children can be…

The Icing on My Cupcake. (as one of those cutesy sayings go.)

They make my brilliant life shine just a little more but do not take away any of my Cup Caked-ness.

Icing may finish off a confection, frost it enticingly, but it cannot stand alone.

So…if you are the icing for someone else’s cup cake,

make sure you are the Cupcake for yourself.

Beware of what my friend did.

Icing alone does not a Cupcake make.

Embrace who you are and the icing will naturally follow.
