The Seven Mile Bridge…

We spent three days in the Florida keys and hubs took me for a walk!

It made a change from sitting in the car and doing our sightseeing through a windscreen.

We walked across a bridge.

The original Seven Mile Bridge was built from 1909-1912 by Henry Flagler, it was one of the longest bridges around at the time and connected Marathon, in the Middle Keys, to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys.  Because a train ran along it was called The Overseas Railroad and formed part of the Florida East Coast Railway.

Originally it had unimaginatively been christened Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel Pacet Channel Bridge.  A bit of a mouthful!  I called it a long walk!

The original Seven Mile Bridge is no longer in use and before you gasp only 2 miles of the bridge is open, so we walked to Pigeon Key.  A place where not a lot happens but a nice cup of tea or coffee would not have gone amiss!  I had to wait until we got back into town.

I was reminded of Southend Pier which is 1.6 miles long and has a nifty little transport device that will sweep you off your feet if you decide you have bitten off more than you can tramp.

At Pigeon Key I realised we had left the car on the other side and no none shank’s pony options.  In a burst of energy I ran a few hundred centimeters, just to show off for hubs,

and then we strode on out of the sunset.
