Watering Hole…

Where is your watering hole?

Where do you go to cool down?

To become re-hydrated?

To re-fresh yourself?

My Benedictine teacher called it

Re-sourcing the Soul.

What is “it”?

Being…

I learned many years ago that as an active mother it was almost impossible to “be” when I was trying to keep my children in order.

At church I felt I had lost my connection to the Lord,

I could no longer immerse myself in the ritual,

there was no mindfulness while I was monitoring squabbling siblings.

My body switched to auto pilot,

the liturgical blocking I’d learned at my parents’ knees so I didn’t embarrass them or myself during mass by standing when I should be kneeling and sitting when I should be genuflecting kicked in.

As I learned more about my inner life, how my mind doesn’t have to be in gear and engaged for my soul to be nourished and re-sourced, I began to relax while preventing my children from coming to blows in the pews.

I let my soul be.

I continued with my walk, I sank into my watering hole I did it for the essence of my being that can separate and re-hydrate on its own.

For this reason it is important for children who do not want to join you at church or Sunday school or devotions or bible study, to be there anyway for the sake of their souls.

Without the opportunity to soak in the re-generating water of God’s Word the soul does run the risk of shriveling and drying  up.

Exposed regularly it is able to absorb what it needs, to flourish and flower so that …during those not so Christian moments our children may have in the future,

or we for that matter,

Odd bits of scripture,

Snatches of prayer,

Verses from favorite hymns,

Tunes and smells,

spring unbidden to mind and the slow but sure work of drawing us to Himself is able to begin again.

Go to your favorite place of rest, your cooling off watering hole where you re-hydrate and emerge refreshed,

Say Om, Amen, Moo or just plain

Aah…

Give your soul a treat and Be.
