Welcome to the World Sophie Sparrow…

Finally!

My phone beeped at 2.22 on Wednesday morning, October 2nd.

“Headed to the hospital” I read, from Simon, our bird-keeping, rock climbing son and expectant Dad!

This has to be the only time when a message containing those words is met with excitement!

“Shall we come?” I responded, wide awake.

“Not right away, we’ll see how it goes when we get there.”

I fell back into a fitful, dream-filled sleep about a hospital waiting room where Simon was vetting the visitors based on whether or not he or she had brought a gift…and if so…what?!

At 4.14 I was awakened again,

“She’s 8 cm and moving along quickly”

“Can we come?” I asked already out of bed and headed for the shower.

“You can but it will be waiting room only till she’s born. No more than 2 people in the labour room”

I’m guessing the Doula and Simon…and Lindsey of course, with nurses and doctors.

“That’s OK” I text-ponded and we were out of the house and on our way by 440am.

Sitting in the cold waiting room at Margot Perot I remembered quite a different waiting.  Thirty-four years ago, like Lindsey I too was getting ready to meet my firstborn.  Unlike her though I didn’t know whether I was going to have a boy or a girl.

“She’s here!” came through around 615am,

“Congrats!  Yay!” and he’s teasing her already!!

We crossed ourselves and said a prayer of thanks,

and waited to be invited back to meet her in person.
