Mixed Grill on a Burger…

We were eating a hamburger last night all on our own…unspoken memories of similar quiet meals, aka romantic meals, pre-children, danced around the table.  I didn’t talk about it because I didn’t want to remind us of the fact that this was our life now…no more distractions…at least not until one of them joins the NSPCW (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Wallets) and comes back home to live.

Instead we reminisced about our last pub meal in Bromley with our daughter.  She and her friends from Starbucks used to pop in to the Swan and Mitre for a bite to eat after work.  Apparently the onion rings were to die for and there was this spectacular hamburger (beefburger in English) that was beyond description and had to be personally experienced by the taste bud to be fully appreciated.

“Can we go as my last meal out?”  she asked.

We headed off in the bus at about 7 one evening and found ourselves in a trendy, large pub we’d seen but never entered.  It so happened on this particular night the special was any burger on the menu for only 3.99 with a pint of beer or cider or a glass of wine included.

Malia was chuffed about this!  Really good value  she  thought.  We looked at the menu and the spectacular burger she had been raving about was pictured, this is what it consisted of,

a small plate sized bun,

on which rested a 300 gram beef patty,

carefully settled onto lettuce and tomato

with two small sausages sitting on top,

and slices of bacon jostling for position,

and a fried egg to cap it all off with.

On the plate, holding their own, were the mandatory chips, French fries of England, and three onion rings.  As she had said,

“Spectacular!”                                Massive Burger

We decided to split two of these burger feasts and when they arrived, almost on their own two feet, we cut them into fourths and managed two pieces each before declaring ourselves utterly defeated!

Basically a mixed grill on a burger.  I have never seen anything like it before.  England is slowly becoming Americanised!

Our quiet, undisturbed, hamburger last night just had cheese and salad.  It was quite enough!
