My hubs picks up the free newspapers to read on the train.
There is not a lot of news in these little publications, although they have lots of pages they are more sensational than sources of global information.
But who am to speak about content? I don’t read them, I catch the odd headline.
Like yesterday’s,
“Yob, threw bike on tracks. Later detained.”
The word Yob, boy backwards, is a derogatory term meaning a rowdy, aggressive or violent young man.
It probably well described the aggressive youngster.
However, no matter how I read it “yob” is name calling. A form of speech hubs and I discouraged among our children.
It is a shame that the newspaper could not offer the British public a headline that took a less offensive tone.
“Youth” would work just as well, it describes a young person. “‘He’ was later detained” would tell us the youth was a male. The fact that the youth felt the need to throw down his bike onto the railway tracks would tell us, the readers, something of his nature.
Yob adequately describes this violent young man and uses one word instead of several thus increasing the impact of the headline.
But it is still name calling which is discouraged amongst the label conscious minority who don’t read these free newspapers anyway.
