Rubbing Alcohol Not For Sale…

One of the items we can’t buy here is rubbing alcohol.  We asked at the counter of Boots the Chemist and the sales assistant told us,

“You won’t find rubbing alcohol in liquid form anywhere in the United Kingdom.”

The reason?  Gross misuse by a few folks.

Mainly those who drink it, have they not read about the damage it can do to the gut?

More recently for the attempted manufacture of a suicide bomb.

Yet, despite these publicly proclaimed  dangers of misuse it is still sold cheaply and prolifically in Texas!

My question is, why ban a product that may be drunk by a few desperadoes who are beyond caring about their health, while permitting the widespread sale of intoxicating beverages with only cursory restrictions?

With Christmas just around the corner the places where alcohol can be purchased, the drinking not the rubbing kind, has increased.  Now everywhere hubs and I go, we are assailed with gift packages containing spirits, beers and wines in such unexpected spots as just about every aisle, including the entranceway, of the grocery stores, small news-agent’s, tobacconist’s, department stores, petrol stations, convenience stores and train stations…

The arbitrary ban on the sale of rubbing alcohol due to misuse either by drinking or bomb making, is personally inconvenient when all I want to do is sanitise my toothbrush!

Perhaps I should keep a bottle of gin underneath the kitchen sink with my other cleaning materials.
