The Oysterband…

We attended a fabulous folk, rock concert at St. George’s, our parish church in Beckenham.  It was a fund raiser for a new lighting system.  About 300 people were there, most were fans.  Hubs and I represented the few willing supporters of anything our local church puts on, who had never heard of the live entertainment in store for us!

The Oysterband describe themselves as, “a 30 year overnight success,” having just won all the awards at this year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

How medieval to seek entertainment in an ancient space steeped in history.

Sitting in our church being thoroughly entertained by a group who were well aware of the acoustics and sacredness of the space took me back to the 12th century.

What an innovative way to encourage the local community to darken the doors of a place of worship knowing they would be welcomed without having to account for their faith or explain where they’d been for the rest of their lives.

For me an enlightened path of evangelism; meals, Arts Festivals and concerts, all contributing to the expansion of the congregation of St. George’s and renewing the church as a focal point for family and community activity.

Isn’t that what God’s house is all about?
