The Proposal…

Today is the anniversary of hub’s and my betrothal.  We did not believe in a long engagement so I bore the title, fiance, for two weeks and a day!

We had chosen the ring together in Hatton Gardens in London, the place to go for that special piece of jewellery that says it all.

This weekend our youngest son treated us to a memorable event that would not have been possible if I hadn’t exchanged a word for my sapphire and diamonds,

“Yes!”

Eschewing the traditional choosing of the ring as a couple, my son designed and commissioned an artist to make a unique circlet with which to pop his question.  He thought his proposal should be a surprise in every way.

Which it was.

My son takes after his father, the blue eyed cowboy of my radio show, who is an incurable romantic.

This is good, to have a heart led man beside you.

After several modifications the ring was ready the day before the great event.

Hammered and carved to resemble a pair of eagle wings in flight, the tips meeting at the top of the arc in which a diamond nestles, its beauty reflects the deepest love of my son’s heart.

The proposal was to be a public affair, the organisation was difficult, the subterfuge was nerve wracking, keeping secrets was a challenge.  My son paced and fretted outside his comfort zone.

“It’s what being human is all about,” I said as I looked at his anxious face.

He wanted to spill the beans, to share the electrically charged anticipation which was surging through his veins, with his soul-mate.  He confessed to me that he didn’t know how he was going to get through the last few hours.

I went and walked the labyrinth, he got a hair cut and changed his clothes.

We met him at the fair two hours early and gathered around him like a hedge.

GatheredAround

My prayers still warm upon my lips.

We kept our eyes on the weather and our trust in the Lord..

It was unusually cold!  No more than 57 degrees.

He shivered and wondered out loud what he would do if she didn’t pick him for the bird act.

We’d made signs,

“Pick me!” and “Pick Him!”  to hold up.

He looked handsome, the ring was attached to a dollar bill for the African Black Crow to snatch from his hand and deliver to his intended on stage.

It was so cold we felt sorry for the plant in the audience who was to go up on stage and fall in the pool of water to cause the diversion Simon needed to get into position.  His brother was ready to stream the event live for family members who could not be there in person.

On cue the crow flew on stage onto his trainer’s hand and the act began,

“Who has a dollar bill for Davidson to bring to me?” she asked.

Without hesitation my son jumped up, walked forward with his hand outstretched and Davidson swooped in for the money.

His girlfriend, stunned by the appearance of my Zoo Keeper son who should have been at work, managed to say,

“Well, I suppose you’d better go over to that gentleman there…” and before she could finish he was back on her hand and had popped the dollar in her shirt pocket.

“I think you’d better take that dollar out of your pocket and look at it…”  said my son as he walked onto the stage.

onstage

“Oh my goodness, I don’t know what’s going on…” she said.

He took the bill from her and slid off the ring, went down on one knee and the audience erupted!

My eyes tingled and she said,

“Yes!”
