Pedometer…

I decided to download a free Application to my iPhone.

“Only you would call it an ‘application’ Mum, it’s an app,” Daughts corrected me!

A pedometer called Walk Star.

The last time I had used one was in England with my oldest son.  He had one downloaded on his iPhone which he activated for our walk through the Beckenham Place Park.  We were out for an hour since that was the length of time I took the air each day.

When we returned home he had gone slightly further than me, just over a mile, I had gone less than a mile, yet we had walked together matching step for step, or so I thought.

“My stride must be longer than yours,” he consoled.

Perhaps!

For almost two years I have imagined I travel about 1 mile during my hour long walks each day.  Nothing to write home about, no-one to write home to!

Until I used my newly downloaded pedometer APP. to walk through a park just outside Lindale.

The last time I had been there it took me 15 minutes to circumambulate the lake/pond so I had circled it four times to complete my hour and my mile…or so I thought.

This time my nifty pedometer read-out informed me that, once around the pond-ish-lakey expanse of water was more like 8/10 of a mile.  I went around four times because it still took me 15 minutes to cover the perimeter and the total distance I trod was 3.5 miles.

Much more like it!

Furthermore I had walked 6,000 steps, clocked a rapid 3.5 mph and used 204 calories, almost equivalent to the Snickers I had eaten at the half way mark with hubs.

I was chuffed.

Today I did my usual walk at Hideaway, around a rather large lake.  I was out for an hour (and 8 minutes according to my pedometer) and covered an impressive 4.2 miles at 3.3 mph, burned 270 calories and stepped 7900 times!

I am still calibrating my app. to a set distance so the steps fluctuate but I know in an hour I walk a modest 3.9 miles, not the 1 I thought I was doing for the last couple of years!  The speed changes if I stop to take photos but all in all it adds up to quite a few miles in a week,

a month,

a year!

Annually a whopping 1456 miles and I’m not even going anywhere!  That’s 3/4 of the Appalachian Trail my friends are preparing for as we speak!

Wow!
