Restoring Wood…

I am not going to list all the advantages of coconut oil, there are plenty of places you can go to find the benefits and multi-uses of this product.

What I’m going to do today is show its brilliance as a wood restorer.

I have some lovely pine pieces I brought home with me from London which I treat with pure coconut oil.  It brings out the golden color of the wood beautifully.

Every time I use it, to add new life to yet another piece of furniture, I realize I should have taken a before photo, so to date I have no evidence to support my claims of genius on the part of this organic product.

Somehow mere  words cannot accurately describe the difference a loving wipe with this unpretentious oil makes when I show Hubs the brilliant gleam of the latest recipient of my natural restorative agent.

“Remember what it looked like yesterday?”  I’ll ask.

“Not really, but it sure does look good now!”

But hurrah!  Yesterday I remembered to get out my iPhone when I brought over a rocking chair I had neglected on my front porch for the best part of a year.

There really wasn’t a place in the house for it, once I’d finished moving furniture around when we first moved in, and exposure to the severe southern summers and the wet and cold of this year’s winter did nothing for its appearance.

After giving it a cursory sanding, primarily to rid it of the last of the peeling varnish, I prepared it for a photo shoot on my terra-cotta kitchen floor.

Coconut

Before

I filled a ramekin with coconut oil, conveniently liquid thanks to the 85 degree day, and armed with a lovely soft rag I went to work, slowly rubbing it gently onto the wood.

The rhythmic, circular motions were therapeutic and the results instantly gratifying.

The chair and my hands were both soaking it up and, as an added benefit, my very nosey cat was able to give me a helping paw without fear of being poisoned.

I’m amazed at how beautiful my rocker looks now!

After

I would never have guessed the natural wood to be so radiant and rich.

I have awarded it a place in my lounge,

and stand amazed that this is the same oil I cook my eggs in!

How I love this very versatile product!
