This is the Record of John

A year ago I was at evensong in the Parish Church, Beckenham, St. George’s.

It was the feast of the birth of John The Baptist, June 24th.

A young member of the choir sang, This is the Record of John.  Text:  John 1:19-23 set to the  Music of Orlando Gibbons.

I kicked myself for not having taken my iPod to record it.

I had no idea that I would be back the following year.

Evensong is printed in our mass bulletin so yesterday morning I knew the choir were again singing, This is the Record of John.  I invited Hubs and this time my iPhone tagged along.

Below is the resultant recording, amateur to say the least but still beautiful.

Here is the text that goes with it:

This is the record of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,

“Who art thou?”

And he confessed and denied not, and said plainly,

“I am not the Christ!”

And they asked him,

“What art thou then?  Art thou Elias?”

And he said, “I am not!”

“Art thou the prophet?”

And he answered,

“No!”

Then said they unto him,

“What art thou?  That we may give an answer unto them that sent us.  What sayest thou of thyself?”

And he said,

“I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.'”

God is so very good.
