Working 2…

Working last week was a really good way to earn some money.  I know, I know…it’s a new concept for me!  Working proved to be a good way to drag me from the work I do best, writing, companioning, organising, mothering, wifing  and upkeeping.

I companion and mother my children when they randomly pop in from time to time.  I chat, I listen, I check in.  Sometimes I’m sassed.  This is not as bad as being the subject of anger I am told, although it sounds the same!  Often I am eye rolled when I want to approach something with more precision than most of the people I am related to do.  Mostly I am imposed upon by sneaky little heads around doorways with cups of tea,

“It’s me again…. come to chat, if you’re not busy?”

How can a mother be busy when one of her children seeks out her company?

I write quickly, I schedule my time so that I have time to be available.  Because there are five other people who live within a mile of me, there is a lot of time when I need to be available.  It can’t be scheduled.  Sometimes I am available and no-one comes a-knocking.

Last week I was not available and that bothered my children.  They had to resort to the “hey!” text, which I wasn’t always able to answer because I travelled a lot during those 27 hours, along roads I never knew existed. And I don’t text and drive!  The children realised that for a few hours I had a life that wasn’t conducive to theirs.  They had to wait in line…as homeschoolers we don’t like to wait in line for anything.

I think they began to appreciate me, for just a wee moment.  This week I am playing catch up and was not able to get to my writing until later this evening.  Each child has come and plonked themselves on my study couch for an hour or so over the last 24 hours.  I am writing furiously on my mac and they acknowledge this,

“Sorry I’m disturbing your writing,”  I look up, and smile…”But…as I was saying…” and I put down my keyboard and listen.

I am caught up in their lives, so perhaps tomorrow I can catch up on mine.
