This is an odd one. I love the way that some powers that be in the candle making industry have been able to capture all kinds of outdoorsy and warm & fuzzy feeling smells in wax that I happily burn in my office.
In the spring and summer I am partial to tangy, fruity smells that are fresh and cool.
In the fall and winter I tend towards the pumpkin, spice and cinnamon smells with sugar and baked goods thrown in.
My favourite at the moment is burning in the kitchen, it is mulled cider and makes my tastebuds explode each time I walk within three feet of it. Uttterly delicious.
It’s the one in my office that this is all about. I bought a candle that is described as ‘Gooey, Marshmallow S’mores.”
Hubs asked me as he came in for a visit,
“Are you burning something chocolatey in here?”
I had to think because it didn’t smell like chocolate to me, it just smelled sweet and familiar. Homey in my sometimes stressful office.
I left my desk for lunch and shut my office door, to keep the warmth I’d generated, in.
On my return I smelled an aroma of warm leather and tobacco smoke. It smelled like a study. I sat for a few moments and thought… trying to conjure up the place my senses were taking me to.
My breathing had slowed and I found myself in a peaceful state. Then I had it. My workplace smelled like my grandmother’s lounge where my grandfather smoked his roll-ups, in his soft, battered leather chair, watching the evening news.
My grandmother too would indulge in her one-a-day habit and smoke her cigarette, also while watching the news, propped up against the doorjamb between the kitchen and the lounge.
I doubt very much whether any of my children would find the smell of cigarette smoke familiar and comforting. Most recently I smelled it in a bar I went to with my oldest son. It was oppressive as the pubs in London used to be when I was a teenager.
But the smells of my grandfather’s tobacco mixed with warm leather, transport me to gentle, childhood summer holidays spent with them.
Gooey Marshmallow and S’mores is here to stay!
