Skye Paddling…

The day after we arrived in Turkey Creek, before our friends left for their trip, the heavens opened and flooded both porches in our stilt house and the garage, new room and utility room below.

We were here for four months last year and never did the downstairs flood.  Something must have changed with the natural drainage, water was streaming under the doors and swirling around car wheels, work benches and furniture.  My friend and I worked hard, dispersing the eddying puddles with brooms, sweeping it to the lawns outside.

As it ran amok around our ankles the men dug a trench alongside the house and laid a pvc pipe to encourage the run off into the canal.

It took all week to dry out the carpets, the sun didn’t show its face to help and the ground lay drunk and sodden.

We took the dogs for their walks and there were little lakes everywhere, much to Skye’s delight.

She couldn’t resist the cooling effect on her little paws and stood, shoulder deep, in ecstasy.

My friend told me she had only just discovered the fun of swimming, at least as long as her feet remained firmly on solid ground!

She waded purposefully through the shallows snapping the water into submission,

until it went up her nose and caused her to choke and cough as she made her way back to the safety of the pavement gagging and sneezing to resume trotting happily along very pleased with herself.

All part and parcel of being an adorable Westie.
