Stray Dogs and Pigs…

You already know about Charlie, the neighborly dog who joins us early in the morning for our walk.

She protects us from rabbits;

We protect her from other dogs patrolling their boundaries.

Then she hangs with us on our front porch while we journal, pray and drink green tea.

She usually follows me to the barn to wake up the kittens but gets too excited at the prospect of playmates so I have to send her home.

The other day she came wandering back with another neighbor’s dog, Beau, who made his morning constitutional rounds marking our trees and yawning nonchalantly.

Who needs their own dogs when we can enjoy those around us at no cost?

As I was heading back to our house I saw Charlie and Beau with a pair of young Pyrenees, who had recently taken to visiting, running across our front pasture,

there was a black four footed something… that could have been a dog…running with them.

On closer inspection I shouted up to Hubs,

“Is that a pig?!”

It was and from a distance I thought it looked rather potbellied.

Before I could get a picture they all went tearing up our driveway and turned left onto the lane.

At pizza night we had something to talk about and it turned out we weren’t the only ones to have spied the strange posse of four dogs and a black potbellied pig.

A text the following evening announced,

“This ain’t no potbellied pig!”

Caught raiding Beau’s food bowl our neighbor fired a shotgun into the air to scare it off and all it did was look up and carry on eating!

It was definitely tame!

“I’ve got a large fire pit out back,” I texted back!

Never a dull moment out here in rural Texas.
