In England, before any major event, and especially if any member of the royal family is present, our National Anthem is played. We all stand up and sing God Save the Queen. We couldn’t imagine it any other way.
Last night, at the Dallas Wind Symphony concert in the beautiful Meyerson Symphony Centre, we all rose to our feet for the National Anthem, American style. We sang the Star Spangled Banner with our right hands over our hearts showing respect and gratitude for our country and our freedom.
This was a first for me since becoming a citizen. I felt fully vested!
We sat back down and hubs said,
“That was nice…unusual at a performing arts event.”
I had to agree.
While I was standing, fully present in the moment, I felt,
patriotism at its very best
unity with all its differences
energy amid the soaring notes
rapport lingering between the aisles
a single vision among the many
the comfort of common love
a focus spawning strength
a power that smacks of leadership
E Pluribus Unum.
